Fiqh al-Rida and ‘Uyun Akhbar al-Rida (AS)

Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (AS) said: One day the Commander of the Faithful (AS) said to his son Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya: "O my son, rise and bring me a basin with water for purification." He brought it to him, and he dipped his hand into the water and said: "In the name of God, and praise be to God who made water purifying and did not make it impure." Then he performed the cleansing (istinja) and said: "O God, fortify my private parts and keep them chaste, cover my nakedness, and forbid them to the Fire." Then he rinsed his mouth and said: "O God, instruct me in my plea on the day I meet You, and loosen my tongue with Your remembrance." Then he drew water into his nose and said: "O God, do not deprive me of the fragrance of Paradise, and make me among those who smell its breeze, its spirit, and its perfume." Then he washed his face and said: "O God, whiten my face on the day when faces are blackened, and do not blacken my face on the day when faces are whitened." Then he washed his right hand and said: "O God, give me my book in my right hand, and eternity in the Gardens in my left." Then he washed his left hand and said: "O God, do not give me my book in my left hand, and do not make it chained to my neck; and I seek refuge in You from the garments cut from the fires." Then he wiped his head and said: "O God, envelop me in Your mercy, Your blessings, and Your pardon." Then he washed his feet and said: "O God, make my feet firm upon the Path (Sirat) on the day when feet slip, and make my striving be in that which pleases You with me." Then he turned to his son and said: "O my son, whichever believing servant performs ablution as I have and says the like of what I said during his ablution — God will create from every drop an angel who glorifies Him, magnifies Him, praises Him, and proclaims His oneness until the Day of Resurrection. And whichever believer recites during his ablution 'Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree' emerges from his sins as on the day his mother bore him. And there is no prayer except with a complete ablution, presence of intention, purity of certainty, an emptied heart, and the abandonment of preoccupations — and that is His saying: 'So when you are free, then labor, and to your Lord turn in longing.'" (Fiqh al-Rida, vol. 1, p. 65)

Imam Rida (AS) said: One day the Commander of the Faithful (AS) asked his son Muhammad al-Hanafiyya to prepare water for his ablution. Muhammad brought the water in a bowl. The Commander of the Faithful (AS) dipped his hand into the water and said: "In the name of God, and praise be to God who made water purifying and did not make it impure." Then he rinsed a little of the water in his mouth and said: "O God, instruct me in my plea on the day I meet You, and loosen my tongue with Your remembrance." Then he washed his nose with the water and said: "O God, do not deprive me of the fragrance of Paradise, and make me among those who smell its breeze, its spirit, and its perfume." Then, while washing his face, he said: "O God, whiten my face on the day when faces are blackened, and do not blacken my face on the day when faces are whitened." Then he washed his right hand and said: "O God, give me my book in my right hand, and eternity in the Gardens in my left." Then he washed his left hand while saying: "O God, do not give me my book in my left hand, and do not make it chained to my neck; and I seek refuge in You from the garments cut from the fires." While wiping his head he said: "O God, envelop me in Your mercy, Your blessings, and Your pardon." And while wiping his feet he said: "O God, make my feet firm upon the Path (Sirat) on the day when feet slip, and make my striving be in that which pleases You with me." When his ablution was complete, he said to his son: Whoever performs ablution in this way and says these words — from every drop of his ablution an angel is created who, until the Day of Resurrection, glorifies, praises, magnifies, and proclaims the oneness of God. Likewise, any believer who recites the Surah of Qadr during his ablution is cleansed of his sins like a newborn just come into the world. True prayer requires complete ablution, presence of heart, possession of certainty, and freedom from preoccupations — as God has said: First free yourself, then turn to God and long for His threshold.
