Muhammad ibn Humran, from his father, from Abu 'Abd Allah Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq (AS): He said: The Commander of the Faithful (AS) said to Qanbar: Rejoice, and give glad tidings. Truly, everything has a leader, and the leader of the earth is the land in which the Shi'a dwell. Truly, everything has an object of desire, and the desire of the world is that our Shi'a dwell in it. And all of you are the people of God's call and the people of His guardianship; no fear shall be upon you, nor shall you grieve; all of you are in Paradise, so vie with one another in righteous deeds. (Fada'il al-Shi'a, vol. 1, p. 9)
The Commander of the Faithful (AS) said: Everything has a leader, and the leader of the regions of the earth is the land in which the Shi'a dwell. Everything has an object of desire, and the desire of the world is that our Shi'a dwell in it. Then he said: O Shi'a! You are all people of God's call and of His guardianship, and there is no fear or grief upon you; you are all destined for Paradise — but strive to reach its high degrees.
From Abu Basir, from Abu 'Abd Allah (AS), who said: The Commander of the Faithful (AS) said: I am the shepherd, the shepherd of mankind. Do you suppose the shepherd does not know his own sheep? He said: Juwayriya rose before him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, who then are your sheep? He said: Those with pale faces and lips withered from the remembrance of God. (Fada'il al-Shi'a, vol. 1, p. 26)
One day the Commander of the Faithful (AS) said: I am the shepherd of the believers! Can a shepherd fail to know his own sheep? Juwayriya rose and asked: What is the mark of those whose shepherd you are and over whom you watch? He said: They are those whose faces are pale from the intensity of their asceticism and whose lips are dry from the intensity of their remembrance of God.
(We say: this Juwayriya is not Juwayriya bint al-Harith, the wife of the Messenger of God (PBUH). This is Juwayriya ibn Mus-hir of Kufa. He was among the companions of Ali (AS) and was present in most of his battles. Juwayriya was trusted, relied upon and loved by the Commander of the Faithful (AS), and was counted among the keepers of his secrets. One day Ali (AS) looked at him and said: 'Ya Juwayriya, alhaq bi; a la ta'lamu anni ahwaka wa uhibbuka?' — O Juwayriya, come to me; do you not know that my heart longs for you and that I love you? Then he said to Juwayriya: I shall tell you certain matters; commit them to memory. al-Rawandi writes in al-Khara'ij wa al-Jara'ih: One day the Commander of the Faithful (AS) said to Juwayriya: You will be killed at the hands of a base and ignoble man; he will first cut off your hands and feet, and then hang you on the gibbet. Some time later, when Ziyad became governor of Kufa on behalf of Mu'awiya, he summoned him and gave the order, and Juwayriya's hands and feet were cut off and then he was hanged.)
