From Ali (AS), who said: While the Messenger of God (PBUH) was sitting, he asked after one of his companions. It was said: O Messenger of God, affliction has reduced him to the likeness of a featherless chick. So he (PBUH) went to him, and found him indeed like a chick from the severity of his affliction. He said to him: Did you use to make a certain supplication in your health? He said: Yes; I would say: O Lord, whatever punishment You would inflict on me in this world and the next, hasten it for me in this world. He (PBUH) said: Why did you not rather say: O God, our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire [Qur'an 2:201]. So he said it, and it was as though he had been loosed from a tether: he rose up sound and went out with us. (al-Thaqib fi al-Manaqib, vol. 1, p. 64)
The Commander of the Faithful (AS) said: We were sitting with the Messenger of God (PBUH) when he asked after one of his companions. They said: He has been stricken and has become like a chick without feathers. He said: Let us go visit him. We found him utterly weak and wasted. The Messenger of God (PBUH) asked: Have you made some particular supplication? He said: Yes; I said: O God, let me taste the punishment of this world and the next right here in this world! The Messenger of God (PBUH) said: No; pray thus instead: O God, our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire [Qur'an 2:201]. So he prayed thus, and recovered his health.
