Kalam al-Amir, Volume Three

Sa‘d al-Su‘ud

And it is related from the Commander of the Faithful that he said: A man may be pleased that the strap of his sandal should be better than the strap of his companion's sandal, and thereby he falls under the reckoning of exaltedness. (Sa'd al-Su'ud, vol. 1, p. 88)

Concerning the verse 'That abode of the hereafter We assign to those who desire neither exaltedness upon the earth nor corruption; and the outcome belongs to the God-fearing' [Qur'an 28:83], the Commander of the Faithful (AS) said: Even that a man should wish the strap of his sandal to be better than another's brings him under this verse.

From Asbat ibn Irq, who said: Sa'id ibn Kurd related to me, saying: I was with my master on the day of the Camel, with the standard, when a horseman came forward. A'isha said: Ask him who he is. He was asked: Who are you? He said: I am Ammar ibn Yasir. She said: Say to him: What do you want? He said: I adjure you by God, who sent down the Book to His prophet, the Messenger of God, in your house: do you know that the Messenger of God made Ali his legatee over his family? She said: By God, yes. He said: Then four horsemen came, and one of them called out. A'isha said: This is the son of Abu Talib, by the Lord of the Ka'ba! Ask him what he wants. He said: I adjure you by God, who sent down the Book upon the Messenger of God in your house: do you know that the Messenger of God made me his legatee over his family? She said: By God, yes. (Sa'd al-Su'ud, vol. 1, p. 236)

The narrator says: On the day of the Camel, a lone horseman charged towards the army of the Camel. A'isha said: Ask who he is. The horseman said: I am Ammar ibn Yasir. A'isha said: What do you want? Ammar said: I adjure you by the God whose revelation came down to His Messenger in your house: did the Messenger of God (PBUH) not appoint Ali (AS) after him as legatee over his wives? A'isha said: Indeed he did! A little later, four horsemen charged towards the army of the Camel. Three of them halted at a distance and one came up towards A'isha's litter. A'isha said: By God, it is Ali himself! Ask him what he wants. Ali (AS) came forward and said: I adjure you by the God who sent down His revelation upon His Messenger in your house: did the Messenger of God (PBUH) not appoint me as your legatee? A'isha said: He did!
